Wheelchair accessible picnic tables are available on the deck at the visitor center and at the picnic shelter on the north end of the visitor center parking lot. Padre Island National Seashore separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna Madre, one of a few hypersaline lagoons in the world. The most significant undeveloped barrier island in the world is 30 miles south of Mustang Island State Park. The park film is closed captioned and located within the exhibit area. The visitor center is fully accessible with entrance doors operable by buttons, lowered information and sales desk, and accessible restroom stalls. More information is available about camping. Malaquite Campground sites number 12 and 13 have a paved path to the picnic tables and paved access to accessible restrooms and showers. An artificial waterway, Mansfield Channel, cuts through Padre Island at the southern end of the national park.The only way to drive from North Padre Island to South Padre Island is by driving inland, down Highway 77, and back out to the south end of the island a driving trip of 3-4 hours. Padre Island begins at the edge of Corpus Christi, and follows the coast down to Port Isabel. From the waters edge of the Gulf of Mexico to the shores of the Laguna Madre, many animals call Padre Island 'home. Padre Island National Seashore provides a vast array of critical habitat types to an even more diverse spectrum of inhabitants. Beach wheelchairs are available for loan during guided beach walks. A 70 mile stretch of uninhabited coastal island, Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) hosts myriad species of wildlife and incredible year round fishing opportunity. A spotted ground squirrel nibbles on vegetation. Several ranger talks take place on the visitor center deck throughout the year and are wheelchair accessible. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. North Beach and South Beach may be accessed by driving directly on the sand. A wheelchair accessible ramp leads from the visitor center deck to the edge of the sand on Malaquite Beach. So its a great area to go beachcombing if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. It extends south from Corpus Christi to Port Isabel, just north of the Mexican border, and is separated from the mainland by Laguna Madre. Little Shell and Big Shell Beaches: Little Shell Beach, located 10-15 miles down South Beach, and Big Shell Beach, located 20-30 miles down South Beach, are sections of the shoreline where seashells can be found in larger concentrations. ![]() They are available first come, first served. Padre Island, barrier island, 113 miles (182 km) long and up to 3 miles (5 km) wide, lying in the Gulf of Mexico along the southeastern coast of Texas, U.S. Beach wheelchairs and beach walkers can be borrowed from the visitor center daily from 9am to 4:45pm. ![]()
